PHOEBE COLDRICK-SMITH
Sandys Row - September 2017-June 2018
The project is situated in a building called Sandys Row which is a synagogue located in Spitalfields, London. The area for the brief was the basement. The brief was to research the history of the site, the building, the area and demographics. The research formed the basis of the “aim” and its concept to create a ‘centre’ to provide a community facility which would generate, not only, a cultural and community space, but also an income for the synagogue.
“Bringing people together culturally as well as across generations”
Exploration of tiles to be used within the proposed scheme
The concept of the need to merge contemporary use with the historic understanding of the building and its context led to experimenting with layering. With the need to layer the use of the space, as well as it being used across generations, enabled the design for each tile to develop a unique response to this.
